To get more on a positive track, can you talk a bit about West Of Loathing? I've seen it on the eShop for switch but I don't really know much about it beyond that it's generally well liked and would appreciate hearing more about what it's like and all

yes! I know some are put off by the art style of the game (something I find very refreshing honestly), but its implemented in a way that works to its advantage. It’s heavily reliant on dry, witty comedy as well as wordplay and pokes fun at common systems and expectations present in other rpgs. This game had me laughing often.

The soundtrack is varied and fun, adding to the atmosphere of the game. It genuinely feels like a grandiose adventure at times even with the stick figure characters.

The battle system is simple and no enemy is really that challenging, but it’s also relatively quick. I never had to grind to complete it. I actually looked forward to certain fights because the description of the enemy was usually pretty fun.

It’s bigger than you’d think, with a lot of context-sensitive items and perks that unlock areas, dialogue, and loot throughout. Choices matter and can alter areas and lock you out them if you’re not careful. There’s also a promise of dlc (the Desolate Lonely Coast in-game).

It’s a romp. I was a cow puncher first run, I’m gonna go snake oiler second.

I think you sometimes can be a bit overly negative / harsh, but I definitely can understand not really wanting to experience that same overly classic storyline that Square’s trying to rely on with these secondary releases.

that’s also really fair. I know I’m harsh on rpgs. I just know that a studio with the talent and money that square-enix and its subsidiaries has, it really shouldn’t be as reliant on dated cliche plot devices and characters as it is.

It comes right down to: more Nier Automata quality, less Final Fantasy 1 remakes.

Bravely Default “thing”?

spoilers for the plot of the first Bravely:

Bravely Default’s entire middle revolved around retaking the four elemental crystals which reset the universe to before you took them, with very minor inconsequential changes. This caused you to fight bosses again, and take the crystals in the same manner some 3 times in a row. It was the most obvious padding I’ve ever seen in a video game, and it’s just as tedious to play as it sounds. So not only was the premise quite shallow and cliche (for an rpg, as it follows the same plot as the first final fantasy), it only got worse as you played it.

When I see a square-enix rpg follow a cliche, I have been trained by bravely default to expect the worst. But I don’t know, maybe I’m being an asshole about it.

While I do respect your opinion that you don’t like the gameplay, I don’t agree with your criticism of the story. It’s only the first 3 hours of what is supposed to be a very lengthy game, and I don’t think that any jrpg’s story rockets off in the first 3 hours, minus Xenoblade Chronicles.

That’s fair. They could definitely subvert the cliches a number of the characters are falling into, but I still have no interest in finding out. The game doesn’t really have a hook, so to speak.
